For most of the last few years, advertising inside an AI chatbot was a thought experiment. That changed in 2026.
OpenAI switched on advertising inside ChatGPT, and the UK is now part of it. UK users on the Free and Go plans started seeing sponsored placements from 6 June 2026, making Britain OpenAI’s first European ad market.
This is a new kind of placement. People reach ChatGPT mid-decision, comparing products, researching services, and working out what to buy. That moment has never been available to advertisers before.
The part that trips people up is treating it like Google Ads with a fresh coat of paint. It works differently. There are no keywords to bid on, the audience is structurally limited, and the buying tools are still maturing week by week.
TL;DR: ChatGPT Ads are live in the UK as of June 2026, but only for users on the Free and Go tiers, and the self-serve Ads Manager has only just opened to UK advertisers. The platform suits B2B, SaaS, and considered-purchase brands whose buyers research before they commit. There are no keywords. You target through “context hints” instead. Treat it as an extra layer alongside Google and Meta rather than a replacement, prepare your AI visibility now, and judge it on lead quality and pipeline value rather than click-through rate.
How ChatGPT Ads actually work
If you run Google or Microsoft Ads, some of this will feel familiar and some of it will not.
When someone on the Free or Go plan asks ChatGPT a question, a sponsored placement can appear directly below the AI’s answer. It is clearly labelled as “Sponsored” and sits visually separate from the response. OpenAI has been firm that ads do not influence what ChatGPT actually says, a principle it calls answer independence.
The ad format is deliberately minimal. You get an advertiser name and favicon, a short headline, a brief description, a landing page URL, and an optional image.
The biggest departure from search is targeting. There are no keywords to bid on. Instead, advertisers provide “context hints”, which are phrases describing the kinds of conversations where your product or service is relevant. If someone has spent the week asking ChatGPT about home improvements and then asks which tools are worth buying, a relevant brand can surface at that moment.
OpenAI handles the matching. Advertisers never see a user’s personal details or conversation content.
Why UK businesses are paying attention
ChatGPT reached roughly 900 million weekly active users in early 2026, and the ad-supported free tier makes up the large majority of them. That is a substantial audience that was not reachable through paid placement before.
The intent behind those conversations matters more than the raw number. Criteo, an early ad tech partner, published data from a sample of 500 US retailers showing that users referred from ChatGPT convert at roughly 1.5 times the rate of other referral channels.
The channel is also growing fast. OpenAI’s ad business reportedly crossed $100 million in annualised revenue within six weeks of the US launch, and the company has publicly projected $2.5 billion in ad revenue for 2026, rising toward $102 billion by 2030.
A new channel with that kind of momentum is worth understanding early, before competition for the space builds.
Where ChatGPT Ads are available right now
ChatGPT advertising began in the United States on 9 February 2026, then expanded to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in March. The UK went live on 6 June 2026 as the fifth market and the first in Europe. Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Mexico are next on the list.
There are two separate milestones, and people often blur them.
The first is the consumer side. UK users on the Free and Go tiers have been seeing ads since 6 June. The second is the advertiser side. For the first couple of weeks, UK brands could only register interest and buy through an OpenAI representative while the self-serve Ads Manager stayed US-only.
That gap closed quickly. Around 19 June 2026, OpenAI began rolling out its self-serve Ads Manager Beta to UK businesses, letting them open an account and build campaigns with minimal setup. The UK is moving faster than the US did, where the same step took roughly three months.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?
There is no fixed rate card because ChatGPT Ads run on an auction.
In the US, where pricing is most established, OpenAI moved from a CPM-only model to CPC bidding in May 2026. The recommended starting bid sits at roughly $3 to $5 per click. For CPM campaigns, OpenAI listed a $60 default max bid at launch, though real-world rates have reportedly fallen as low as $25 as the auction matured.
A third buying option, cost-per-action, arrived in early June 2026. This lets you pay when a user completes a defined action such as a sign-up or purchase, rather than just for the click.
These are third-party estimates converted from US dollars, not OpenAI-published UK rates, and they move fast. The early price premium has already gone, so a UK first-mover is buying learning and position rather than cheap impressions.
One thing has stayed consistent. The US dropped its minimum spend entirely when self-serve opened, so there is no large floor to clear before you can test.
Who actually sees the ads?
Ads only reach users on the Free and Go tiers. Anyone on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Education plans sees no advertising at all. OpenAI also does not show ads to users it identifies or predicts to be under 18.
That has a real consequence for B2B. Many senior decision-makers sit on paid plans funded by their employer, which means they are on ad-free tiers. The audience that does see ads skews towards individual contributors, founders at smaller companies, students, and people using the free version for personal research.
So the headline user count overstates your reachable audience. Compare your actual buyers against who sits on the free tiers before you assume scale.
ChatGPT Ads vs Google and Microsoft Ads
Most businesses are not choosing between these platforms. The real question is whether to add ChatGPT Ads alongside the campaigns you already run.
Reach
Google and Microsoft cover established search volume across every device and intent. ChatGPT Ads reach a different surface, which is people in the middle of an AI-assisted research conversation. The audience is large but limited to free-tier users, so it adds incremental reach rather than replacing your main channels.
Targeting
This is the clearest difference. Google and Microsoft are keyword and audience platforms with mature automation behind them. Microsoft also offers LinkedIn profile targeting that Google cannot match natively.
ChatGPT has no keywords. You describe relevant conversations through context hints, and OpenAI’s ranking decides when to show your ad. It is a less precise lever today, and it rewards advertisers who understand the kinds of questions their customers ask.
Measurement
Google and Meta give you deep, mature attribution. ChatGPT Ads is younger. OpenAI launched a Conversions API and pixel-based tracking in May 2026, and static UTM parameters flow into your existing analytics, so you can separate ChatGPT traffic from other paid channels. The ecosystem works, but it is less developed than what you are used to.
Conversion quality
Early signals are encouraging. Click-through rates reportedly run far lower than Google Search, but referred users have shown conversion quality around 1.5 times higher in the Criteo sample. That trade-off is the entire argument for the channel, which is fewer clicks but better intent.
ChatGPT Ads | Google Ads | |
| Audience | Free and Go tier users only, skewing towards researchers and smaller businesses | Broad reach across all devices, demographics, and intent |
| Targeting | Context hints describing relevant conversations, no keywords | Mature keyword, audience, and automated bidding tools |
| Pricing model | Auction-based CPM, CPC, and CPA, no minimum spend in self-serve markets | Established auction with CPC and CPA, well-documented benchmarks |
| Measurement | Conversions API, pixel, and UTM tracking, still maturing | Deep, mature attribution and reporting |
| UK availability | Self-serve Ads Manager Beta opening to UK advertisers from June 2026 | Fully available and long established |
| Best for | Reaching buyers mid-research during AI-assisted decisions | Scale, volume, and well-understood performance |
Which businesses see the best fit?
The businesses that fit ChatGPT Ads best are B2B, SaaS, consultancies, and considered-purchase brands whose customers research, compare options, and weigh decisions before they buy.
Those behaviours match how people use ChatGPT, which is asking questions, comparing tools, and working towards a choice. Sectors like software, financial services, education, and professional services line up well with that pattern.
ChatGPT Ads are a weaker fit if your audience sits mostly on paid, ad-free tiers, if you rely on impulse or heavily visual buying, or if there simply is not much research-led demand for what you do.
How to approach ChatGPT Ads in 2026
The smart move right now is preparation.
Step 1: Audit how ChatGPT sees you
Open ChatGPT and ask about your business, your services, and the problems you solve. Are you mentioned? Are your competitors? Early US findings suggest businesses already cited organically in ChatGPT answers see their paid placements perform better, because the ad reinforces something the user has already encountered.
Step 2: Strengthen your content and AI visibility
ChatGPT still draws on publicly available information and search indexes to understand your brand. Clear service descriptions, well-structured FAQs, and content that directly answers customer questions all improve how AI represents you. Good SEO and answer engine optimisation are the groundwork here, not a separate trick.
Step 3: Clean up your first-party data and tracking
Get your conversion tracking and first-party data in order. When you do test, you will want clean, server-side conversion signal flowing back so you can judge results properly rather than relying on click counts.
Step 4: Test small and measure what matters
Once you have access through the Ads Manager, start with a controlled test. Write to the short headline and description format, set tight context hints, and judge performance on cost per qualified lead and pipeline value rather than click-through rate. A campaign that drove ten clicks and closed two deals beats one that drove a hundred clicks and closed none.
What about privacy and regulation?
The UK launch brings rules the US pilot never had to deal with.
OpenAI’s EU and UK ads policy, updated on 2 June 2026, requires explicit user consent before personalising ads. Users who opt in can receive ads based on past chats, memory, and ad history. Users who do not opt in receive generic, contextual ads based only on limited information like the current conversation, location, and time.
UK advertisers also operate under an active regulator in the Advertising Standards Authority, and the ICO’s guidance on profiling will shape how chat history and memory can be used for targeting. These are still settling, so they are worth watching as the rollout matures.
So, are ChatGPT Ads worth it in 2026?
For the right business, they are worth preparing for now and testing carefully as access opens.
The strongest fit is B2B, SaaS, and considered-purchase brands whose buyers research before they commit. The audience is limited to free-tier users, the targeting is new, and the measurement tools are younger than Google’s or Meta’s, so this is not the channel to bet your whole budget on yet.
Treat ChatGPT Ads as an additional layer alongside your existing paid strategy. Get your AI visibility, content, and tracking in order, run a small and measurable test once you have self-serve access, and judge it on lead quality and pipeline value.
If your customers research and compare before buying, ChatGPT Ads are worth getting ahead of. If your audience is mostly on paid tiers or buys on impulse, your existing channels are still the better home for your spend.
