Business Strategy Reading Time: < 1 minute

When you’re thinking of buying a new domain name there are some important things to think of. There are some basic rules that are enforced for domain names, focusing primarily on length, punctuation, and formatting.

These general rules are:

  • Domains must use only letters, numbers, or hyphens (-).
  • Domains cannot begin or end with a hyphen.
  • .com, .net, .org, and .info domain names cannot exceed 67 characters in total.
  • .info and .biz domain names must have at least 3 characters, not including .info or .biz.
  • Some domain names cannot exceed 22 characters, not including the extension.
  • Domain names are not case-sensitive.
  • Domain names cannot include spaces.
  • Two-letter domain names are no longer permitted.

Also, domain names should not begin with a number, but, in practice, this is possible in most circumstances.

You can use any combination of letters, words and phrases to create your domain name.
